Quiz #4. Food & Wine matches made in BBQ heaven.

Summer time, means grilling time!

I am probably asked more about food and wine pairings than anything else. It warms my heart that  most people love the simple pleasures in life. Few things can compare to breaking bread with good company over a delicious meal and enjoying a wonderful bottle of wine. Each enhances the evening as well as the other, but together they can make for a truly memorable night.

So, for the latest installment of my ‘Wine Basics Quiz’, I decided to create a “Match the Food to the Wine” quiz with a bit of a BBQ twist, it is summer time after all. The meals I included would be considered your every day grilling dishes and not ‘Haute Cuisine’, which is rarely made by the average person. Focusing on your BBQ favourites! Please remember that there are so many variables when it comes to matching food and wine, especially when you add personal preference to the mix. I believe that these are good pairings which use your basic wine & food matching principles, but it’s ultimately up to you to decide what you like. Try some out this weekend and if you find something that works…please share!

Helpful Hint: You might want to read my blog “Everything you wanted to know about food and wine, but were afraid to ask” before you start the quiz. Click Here

If you learn one new thing about wine today…it’s a good day!

Enjoy!

1. A rare to medium-rare sirloin steak will go well with:

2. When I am serving lightly seasoned grilled chicken, I often will go to my cellar and take out..

3. I like to cook my pizza on a pizza stone right on the BBQ. My choice is a "meat" pizza ( it's a guy thing I guess). My wine of choice would be:

4. Grilling vegetables on the BBQ is easy and as I am told by my lovely wife they are good for me. Green, yellow and red peppers mixed with mushrooms and onions then soaked in a little Balsamic vinegar is my favourite. My wine of choice would be:

5. Italian sausages on the BBQ is a staple during the grilling season. Which wine would pair well:

6. Spicy dishes like Thai and Chinese food (this is when you run out of propane and have to order in) will pair well with:

7. Chicken or pork dishes with cream based sauces will pair well with which wine?

8. A nicely grilled Salmon seasoned with only olive oil, salt & pepper entices me to open:

9. Hamburgers...made from lean ground beef! Need I say more about this classic BBQ fare? I walk into my wine cellar and without hesitation I choose:

10. Last but not least. What might you serve with pork ribs totally soaked in a typical BBQ sauce?

6 out of 10 is better then I expected, especially when I lean more to the reds then whites.
